Local area network A communications network serving users within a limited

geographical area, such as a building or a university campus.

It is controlled by a network operating system and uses a

transfer protocol.

MAC Media Access Control

MPEG-2 Enhanced video/audio compression standard, with high-level

compression that images of studio quality possible. In the

meanwhile it has become established as a broadcasting

standard.

netmask A mask that explains which part of an IP address is the

network address and which part comprises the host address.

It is usually written in dotted decimal notation with periods

separating the bytes, for example "255.255.255.192".

Network Time Protocol A protocol or application service for synchronizing computer

clocks over the Internet
